Hip pain can come from the joint itself, the surrounding tendons and bursae, the spine, or the abdominal wall. A careful evaluation separates true hip-joint problems from the many structures that refer pain to the hip region.
Evaluation
How a hip visit is structured.
- Mapping exactly where the pain lives and what provokes it
- Hip-joint versus extra-articular examination
- Assessment of the lumbar spine and groin as alternate sources
- Ultrasound survey of tendons and bursae around the hip
- Review of MRI, X-ray, and prior injections with a clinical correlate
- Ultrasound-guided diagnostic or therapeutic procedures when indicated
Common conditions evaluated
- Hip osteoarthritis
- Labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement
- Greater trochanteric pain / gluteal tendinopathy
- Iliopsoas and adductor problems
- Athletic groin pain
- Bursitis around the hip
